Much of the architecture described herein is European in origin. The first reason is that an American style was still developing in 1880; most architectural inspiration still drew heavily on European experience. The second reason may be that copyright law was not nearly as effective as it is today and it was easy to lift drawings from other sources (Europe was the best source) to illustrate a book like this.
